The Venetian gondola has existed in Venice since the 11th century and was first mentioned by name in 1094. It is estimated that between 8,000 and 10,000 gondolas were in use during the 17th and 18th centuries, but today, only about 400 are still operating.

A gondola is a traditional flat-bottomed rowing boat in Venice, perfectly suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. It is similar to a canoe but narrower and longer. The oar is not fixed to the hull; it is used for both rowing and steering the boat.

For centuries, the gondola was the main means of transportation and the most common boat in Venice. In modern times, these boats still play a role in the city’s public transport system, serving as traghetti (ferries) across the Grand Canal. They are also used in special regattas (rowing races) held among gondoliers.

However, their primary role today is to carry tourists at a fixed fare. It is estimated that several thousand gondolas existed in the 18th century. Today, only a few hundred remain, most of which are rented out to tourists, while a small number are privately owned and used.
