The ship Bon Homme Richard, built in 1765 under the name “Duc de Duras” in the service of the French Navy. In early 1779 the Duc de Duras was purchased by King Louis XVI and placed under the command of John Paul Jones. Jones renamed the ship Bon Homme Richard to honor American statesman Benjamin Franklin who played a significant role in building diplomatic relations between America and France. The size and armament of the Duc de Duras were equivalent to half of a 64-gun ship of the line.
