Historical information Australia II Yacht Model:
Australia II (KA 6), the 12 meter challenger yacht representing Australia in the America’s Cup. Launched in 1982, it won the Cup in 1983 for the Royal Perth Yacht Club. Skippered by John Bertrand, Australia II was the first challenger to end the New York Yacht Club’s 132 year dominance which included 26 successful defenses.
Designed by Ben Lexcen and built by Steve Ward, with Alan Bond as the owner and John Bertrand as the helmsman, Australia II featured a shorter waterline length and a winged keel with a short chord. This design offered significant advantages in maneuverability and reduced heeling moment (lower center of gravity) but proved to be less effective in rough seas. The yacht also demonstrated exceptional speed upwind. The winged keel represented a major design innovation which led to challenges from the New York Yacht Club regarding its legality. During the summer of 1983, as the Cup defenses were being prepared for that autumn, the legality of the winged keel was contested. However the controversy was resolved in favor of Australia II.
