The MV Kungsholm was built in 1966 by the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland. As a combined cruise ship or ocean liner for the Swiss American Line. It was later converted into a full time cruise ship under the names MV Sea Princess, MV Victoria, MV Oceanic II and MV Mona Lisa.

Under the name Kungsholm  the ship first entered service for the Swiss American Line in 1966 as a transatlantic ocean liner. The last vessel built for the Gothenburg – New York route. In 1978, it was acquired by P&O and sent to Bremer Vulkan in Vegesack for reconstruction. The appearance of the Kungsholm was significantly altered with the removal of the forward funnel, reshaping of the remaining funnel, and the addition of more cabins.
